Six blocks of Delmar Boulevard are filled with dining, shopping, art galleries, book stores and 10 entertainment venues with performances throughout the year, including the Blueberry Hill Restaurant and
Music Club made famous by Chuck Berry. The Moonrise Hotel, known for cool modern design and quirky sophistication also contains evocative art displays. Also “on tap” is a visit to Fitz’s Root Beer, where you can sample the brew and watch it being made. Nearby is Washington University, giving the Loop a trendy college atmosphere with a great mix of urban eclectic shopping. Start with a treat from Gus’s Pretzels, and end with shopping therapy on Antique Row; in between is the Chatillon-DeMenil House (1850/1863), reflecting significant aspects of the St. Louis French cultural heritage. It is tastefully decorated with 19th century furnishings and overflowing with stories of two families who shaped the westward expansion and the City of St. Louis. 6:00 – 8:30 pm Ninth Street Abbey/Soulard. Opening Reception
Join us in the heart of the Soulard Neighborhood Historic District. The reception is a time to meet and greet old friends and get acquainted with those who are new to downtown revitalization. Transportation will take us to the 9th Street Abbey, an abandoned church that stood empty for many years until an imaginative developer, Wayne Long, restored it and turned it into a delightful venue for his wife’s business, Patty Long Catering. Enjoy the pocket garden beside the church, tour the rooftop garden, the stained glass windows, and the entire building, which is now a local favorite for weddings, parties, receptions and small concerts. Expect an evening of great food/drink, and conversation. Dine on your own afterwards in one of the Soulard neighborhood pubs, or return to the hotel on the bus.

Shopping opportunities in an upscale neighborhood of “painted ladies.” a set of stately Victorian homes clustered around Lafayette Park that hosts free summer concerts at the bandstand; a community vegetable garden is adjacent to the glitzy boutiques, bars, specialty shops, and one-of-a-kind restaurants that cater to a hip, urban crowd; a visit to the Square One Microbrewery, the Georgian condo lofts at the former City Hospital, and apartments at the former Wireworks. Redevelopment in the Lafayette Square Historic District was achieved with a variety of funding tools, including Tax Increment Financing (TIF), Business Improvements District (BID) and housing tax credits.

The Central West End is filled with trendy boutiques, antique shops, and restaurants with creative menus along Maryland Plaza and Euclid Avenue, where foot traffic is steady throughout the day and into the night. Take an architectural tour of the Chase-Park Plaza Hotel across the street from Forest Park, plus the awe-inspiring mosaics at Cathedral Basilica. 3:00 – 9:00 pm Downtown Washington Tour and “Show Me Heritage Wine Country Celebration & Dinner”
Washington is an Accredited Main Street ® community with the carefree character of a riverfront town. One hour west of downtown St. Louis, Washington was founded in 1839, but settlers were already here on the Missouri River when Louis and Clark started their trip west in 1804. Washington’s downtown is a National Register Historic District, with many homes and commercial buildings individually listed. During the Downtown Washington Main Street Program’s 20+ year history it has achieved many milestones in organization, design, promotions and economic restructuring. While you stroll the charming downtown streets you will find beautifully preserved buildings that are home to specialty shops, boutiques, antiques, galleries and restaurants with a diversity of ethnic menus, plus a unique Farmers Market. This tour group will remain in Washington for the “Show Me Wine & Dine” event beginning at approximately 7:00 pm.

While celebrating Washington’s rich river heritage and friendly downtown neighborhood, you will have opportunities for wine tasting and purchasing from some of Missouri’s 47 wineries. Learn wine-tasting tips from the experts and the names of their uncommon varieties like Cynthiana/Norton, Vignoles, Seyval and Chambourcin – don’t hesitate to ask the locals to provide you with the correct pronunciation. Dinner and entertainment are hosted by Downtown Washington Inc., an Accredited Main Street® community.

1:00 – 5:00 pm Ste. Genevieve Downtown Tour
Missouri’s French colonial history is preserved here along the quaint streets and charming homes of Ste. Genevieve, about 50 miles south of the St. Louis city limits. Dozens of 18th and 19th century buildings trace the community’s history. In 1960, the National Park Service recognized Ste. Genevieve as a National Historic Landmark, among the first to be acknowledged as a national treasure. Ste. Genevieve’s Art Colony in the 1930’s and 40’s attracted artists who were known around the world. It continues to be a mecca for artists and art lovers. Galleries, shops and cafes and beds & breakfasts abound along the shady streets in the historic district.

1:15 – 4:30 pm Soulard Market & Historic District
Soulard is the city’s oldest residential neighborhood, a National Register Historic District. Its leisurely pace and appreciation of days gone by have attracted many newcomers to visit, and stay. Begin with a loft tour of Soulard Market Apartments – the former Welsh Baby Carriage Factory. Visit the Farmers Market and hear the fascinating story of its origin. Stop by the historic churches, and then see the many red brick townhomes that now house live music clubs and unusual restaurants-some with shady courtyards. Although its origins are French, the District now celebrates its ethnic variety. Listen closely-you may hear the strains of an Irish melody or the soulful sound of a blues guitar coming from one of those courtyards.

Two architectural treasures, one old, one new – City Hall and the Civil Courts Building on Tucker Boulevard, plus many other St. Louis landmarks including the recently restored Orpheum Theatre. See the restoration work ongoing along Washington Avenue, plus office buildings converted to apartments in the Loft and Entertainment District where a swinging nightlife is apparent in clubs interspersed by trendy retail shops; a visit to the Soldiers Memorial on the way back to the hotel.
